An important means to maintain a healthy mouth and to prevent oral diseases is daily
brushing of your teeth and tongue.
This will prevent bad breath caused by germs feeding on small food particles
stuck between your teeth. Daily brushing prevent the formation of plaque - that thin furry
layer on unbrushed teeth that can cause tooth decay if not remove effectively on a regular
basis. If the plaque remains long enough on the surfaces of your teeth it can become
difficult to remove with normal brushing. Eventually the plaque will change into calculus
- a hard layer of dirt attached to the surfaces of your teeth. This will mean an
appointment with your oral hygienist for a professional procedure called scaling and
polishing of the teeth surfaces. Plaque and calculus can irritate healthy gums to become
red and swollen and to bleed easily with normal brushing. If tooth decay, plaque and
calculus remain untreated for long enough, it will cause pain and discomfort. Daily
brushing is the first step in maintaining a healthy mouth and to prevent tooth decay,
plaque and calculus, and eventually discomfort caused by pain.
