Dear Colleagues
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND URGENT INFO RE REGISTRATION OF
DENTAL ASSISTANTS
At a meeting of the Medical and Dental Professions Board of the HPCSA held yesterday [4
October 2005] the issue of the registration of dental assistants was debated.
Despite SADAs previous stance, I now recommend that ALL existing dental assistants,
irrespective of how long they have been working for any dentist, apply for registration
with the Professional Board for Dental Therapy and Oral Hygiene by the 31st October.
All cases that do not comply with the requirements for immediate registration, i.e. a
Technikon course or 5 years in service, will be considered by an ad hoc committee of the
HPCSA. The door is not shut on anyone, but the committee can only assess those assistants
who have applied by 31 October.
SADA continues in its efforts to get on-the-jobtraining recognised by the
HPCSA.
